Description

Job title: Occupational health Therapist 

Salary: TBC 

Hours: 37 

 

The Occupational Therapist (OT) resides within the Wellbeing Team and is critical to the core function of the overall wellbeing service. The OT role is required to deliver a range of services for SYP, providing practical support for individuals or groups of individuals to overcome barriers to work considering physical, psychological, social and environmental factors. The OT is required to work with individuals and their managers to obtain suitable equipment and encourage support mechanisms that will help to establish realistic goals based upon individual or group requirements. Working as part of a multidisciplinary team, the OT will ensure that individuals have access to or are signposted to the support that they need to encourage attendance at work, manage any associated risks and to provide managers with guidance that will support a sustainable workforce.

Key Accountabilities

 

 

  • Conduct ergonomic assessments as required by the force, providing clear recommendations based on professional opinion including any suitable equipment that will support an individual in their role.
  • Conduct assessments to help understand mental health barriers that may be affecting an individual in a specific role or environment, and provide an agreed work plan to encourage sustainable attendance at work.
  • Provide individual support to people who are struggling to maintain their mental health at work including individuals with PTSD, trauma, anxiety, depression, OCD and eating disorders to aid recovery.
  • Support individuals using techniques such as Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT) to build resilience in order to increase their ability to respond to challenging situations within Force.
  • Conduct sensory assessments where appropriate to do so and develop strategies to help reduce anxiety and increase productivity in the workplace.
  • Provide vocational rehabilitation support to individuals who are returning to work after a period of absence providing a solution focused approach to supporting mental and physical health needs.
  • Conduct Environmental assessments to understand barriers that may affecting groups of individuals working in specific conditions or workplaces. 
  • Develop and deliver bespoke training to managers and teams to improve health and wellbeing in the workplace.
  • Provide detailed reports to management, providing clear advice, pathways, timescales and equipment (where appropriate). All advice must be in line with audit criteria.
  • Utilise a bio-psychosocial approach combined with functional assessment to address barriers to work and inform robust work recommendations.
  • Work as part of a multi-disciplinary team and effectively manage each referral to ensure each client receives the expertise required for their particular circumstances.
  • Interpret legislation, policies and procedures to meet South Yorkshire Police requirements for occupational health provision.
  • Deliver occupational health services, which comply with confidentiality and codes of professional practice.
  • Demonstrate good understanding and practical application of relevant health and safety regulations and know when to escalate cases of concern.
  • Maintain accurate occupational health records in a safe and confidential manner through the eOPAS database in accordance with relevant legislation.
  • Assist in the delivery of health promotion activities in line with the Force’s Wellbeing Strategy.
  • Provide individual advice on improving health and wellbeing, signposting to relevant external agencies/charities to help individuals access support and make lifestyle changes.
  • Participate in regular clinical audit to generate continuous service improvements in quality.
  • Be able to prioritise work with effective time management to ensure all tasks are completed accurately and within set timescales/KPIs.
  • To undertake any other duties commensurate with the role.

  • Sensory Assessment Training (desirable).

  • Ability to conduct assessments as required and deliver training.
  • Proven ability to manage a challenging workload and support future Occupational Health Plans.
  • Ability to travel within South Yorkshire Police to deliver an agile occupational health service.

 

 

 

 

  • Registered with the Health & Care Professions Council (HCPC) and professionally qualified with a degree in Occupational Therapy along with significant understanding and practical experience in the health sector.
  • Sensory assessment training (Level 3 Sensory Integration Practitioner) is desirable.
  • Experience of utilising Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT).  
  • Experience of working in a multidisciplinary OH team.
    • Knowledge and understanding of health and wellbeing issues facing Policing.  
    • Proven ability to manage a challenging workload and support future OH plans.
    • Thorough understanding and application of professional regulatory frameworks and their relevance to SYP occupational health services.
